Relocation Interest Remains Strong

Since the AARP named the Wenatchee Valley one of its “Best Places to Retire” in late July, requests to the Chamber for relocation information have spiked.  Here are the numbers:

Average monthly relocation requests, Jan – July 2011                     30

Relocation requests, August 2011                                                            107

Relocation requests, September 2011                                                      91

While the number of requests fell in September from the month before, the rate was still 3 times higher than the monthly average this year prior to our Valley making the list.  Traffic to the relocation page at the Chamber website, wenatchee.org, has also seen a similar spike.

The major component of the relocation information provided to requesters is the Membership Directory and Relocation Guide which is published by the Chamber annually.  Copies of the Guide are available at the Chamber offices, 2 South Mission, and are a conveninet guide to Valley facts and Chamber members.

So Long, Farewell

Can you believe it has been almost four year that I’ve been at the Chamber? I’ll admit, sometime it feels longer, but I can’t quite believe it when I think about it.

On my desk, I have a picture that has been there since I started working at the Chamber. It is of my daughter, taken when I started work: she had no teeth, no hair, and has a nice little bit of drool on her chin. She was about 10 weeks old. Now, she’s 4 (and has plenty of hair and doesn’t drool any more, thank you.)

We’ve done a basic banquet, James Bond Banquet, Jungle and Wild West Banquet. Those events are my favorite.

We’v taken our online presence from a static website to an interactive blog-full 2.0 website, added twitter and FaceBook, and we’re getting better at it every day.

Our events have shifted and changed as needs arrived, and they will continue to do so.

Oh, and we moved our office (if you haven’t been there yet, Open House on September 7, 3:00-5:30, 2 S Mission).

I’ve learned much about business, budgeting, sales, marketing, and event planning.

But mostly, I had my eyes opened to the intricate and interesting business world and business people of the Wenatchee Valley. This may sound weird or naive to you, but having grown up here, working service jobs at restaurants, hotels, and even a video store for two months, I was very familiar with the fun side and the young side of the Valley, but I didn’t have a window into all it took to run those or other businesses that are the heart and soul of life here. Now, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a solid glimps at many aspects of many different industries that give value to my home.

And I truly applaud you. To all the business owners, managers, directors—you are brave, hard-working, and so very necessary. My best wishes to all of you.

Oh, did I mention? My stint at the Chamber has come to it’s close. September 16 will be my last day. I’ve decided there are too many years left in my working-life to not activly persue my passion: teaching. I’ll be at WVC as an adjunct English Instructor, continuing my progress through a teaching certificate for secondary English, and of course, spending more time at my first job: being mama to my children.

Life is good, and I’m sure I’ll see you around. ~Rebecca

Chamber Member Wineries Win Big

At the North Central Washington Winemakers’ Invitational, the judges awarded Chamber member wineries with the full gamete of awards.

Double Gold

Martin-Scott Winery received a Double Gold award for their 2010 Viognier. The judges’ comments read, “It’s easy to love Viognier when it’s made this ell, and Martin-Scott’s version is classic Washington style. It opens with aromas of orange zest and creamsicle, followed by flavors of citrus and cantaloupe. this captures the elegance of the variety.

Martin-Scott’s tasting room is open noon to 5 PM, Fridays and Saturdays, at 3400 SE 10th Street, East Wenatchee. www.martinscottwinery.cm

Side note: This tasting room has one of the best southern views of the Valley. You can’t help but enjoy yourself amidst the orchards, looking over the Columbia River.

Gold Awards

Chateau Faire Le Pont Winery cleaned up this division by collecting five of their own Gold Awards! The tasting room is open from 11 AM to 6 PM Sunday and Monday, and 11 AM to 9 PM Tuesday through Saturday. 1 Vineyard Way, Wenatchee. www.fairlepont.com
