Young Professionals Network

Did you know we’re starting a new event series? We are! On February 3, from 5 to 7 PM, our local Olive Garden will be hosting the first of our YPN series. There will be free appetizers and even free wine tasting by Martin-Scott Winery! (Psst! I just received word that Martin-Scott will be premiering a new wine at the event–Raven’s Ridge Red ’08, to be exact.)

So there will be food and drink and other professionals to chat with…how’s this event different than a traditional After Hours? Well, ultimately, it could be more or less the same. However, this event’s purpose for being is to focus on the younger professionals of our Valley’s workforce. While we’re not putting an age-limit on it, this event is specifically designed for younger people to learn about the business world of the Valley and develop their network of people.

Also, we will be holding a short meeting at this first event to gather a few ideas of what our Valley’s Young Professionals would like to have at these events: educational seminars, activities, speed networking, and simple, free-form networking are a few of the options.

If you don’t feel like you particularly belong within a Young Professional Network, send your younger employees. It will be a great opportunity for them to see that they are not alone in the professional working world, meet a few new resources, and learn that it is often not what you know, but who you know that counts.

Please RSVP to the Chamber at wenchamb@wenatchee.org. See you there!

Social Media for the Chamber (and your Business)

In case you missed it, here is the column I wrote for the Wenatchee Business Journal this month.  Look for Part 2 in the February edition.

I have never been high tech.  I was born before people (like my kids) came standard with the technology gene.  In high school their were a few computer geeks playing Dungeons and Dragons, but I wasn’t one of them (most probably got jobs at Microsoft in the early days and retired fifteen years ago).  When I was practicing law my goal was to retire before I had to have a computer on my desk.  I sort of accomplished that goal:  No computer on my desk when I closed my office to run the Chamber, but found one on my desk upon my arrival.  Of course, now if the computer is down, it seems like I can’t get anything done.

The rising importance of social media in business has been a major story over the last couple of years.  We have embraced it at the Chamber and I wanted to share how a non-techie guy got there, how we use it, and encourage other businesses in our Valley to embrace it because it is part of the future of business and, in my opinion, many local businesses aren’t harnessing its power yet.

Networking Out at Gold’s Gym

I’ve recently started working out at Gold’s Gym. It’s one of those things I’ve been meaning to do for a while now, but finally started in August. All in all, I like it, as far as exercise goes. Honestly, exercise isn’t “my thing,”  but I really feel good about doing something good for my body.

Now, before you get to excited for me or decide to congratulate me on my hard work and dedication, let me tell you Read More »
